Qualification Information

(These regulated qualifications meet the requirements of Defra and the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018.)

Get your Level 3 Award in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare to meet Defra’s requirements for running a regulated dog business (eg dog home boarding, day care, kennels, dog breeding) coupled with a Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs

These Ofqual-regulated qualifications covers the fundamentals of canine welfare, behaviour, handling, and the fundamentals of first-aid for dogs. You’ll learn how to identify and mitigate pain, suffering, and disease in dogs, as well as how to provide them with the best possible care.

The licence criteria stipulates that the licence holder or designated manager is required to be suitably qualified, and any staff employed to care for the animals must have the competence to identify the normal behaviour of the species for which they are caring and to recognise signs of, and take appropriate measures to mitigate or prevent, pain, suffering, injury, disease or abnormal behaviour.

Staff must “hold a formal qualification such as, a Level 2 qualification regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) appropriate for their role or to demonstrate they have relevant and sufficient knowledge and experience.”

‘To meet the “Higher Standard”, one option requires that a member of permanent, full-time staff has an appropriate Ofqual regulated Level 3 qualification.’

With this qualification, you’ll be well on your way to starting your own regulated dog business or working as a canine care professional.

Who is the course for?

This regulated qualification is for anyone who works with dogs – particularly as a:

  • Dog boarder
  • Dog day carer
  • Dog breeder
  • Dog walker
  • Dog trainer/behaviourist
  • Dog groomer
  • Pet sitter

You do not need any prior knowledge or qualifications to study for these qualifications, although some experience or related knowledge will be advantageous.

Assignments and assessments

Learning style and content
This course is a blend of self-paced online learning, self-study recommended resources and research, video seminars, videos, ‘podcasts’, eLearning, Graphics/diagrams, multiple answers and short essay assignments.

Special consideration is provided for those requiring additional learning support (if you require additional learning support it is essential you advise us when you complete and submit your course registration form).

Assessments
Successful achievement is by a Learner presenting a portfolio of evidence that meets the assessment criteria.

Assessments require desk research from the study resources provided to assist the Learner in writing 200-500 word responses including diagrams, illustrations, tables and bullet points as necessary.

An assessment might typically ask the Learner to ‘Explain’ or ‘Describe’ a specific topic or situation, to avoid plagiarism and to provide citation references in order to support the Learner’s response.

Some of the course assessments require the Learner to select the correct options from multiple possible answers including True or False statements.

Self-Evaluation
At the end of the course, each learner is asked to complete a reflective self-evaluation of their learning experience and personal growth.

Pass/Refer
The course is taught against a prescriptive syllabus and the learner is required to evidence their understanding and application of the syllabus.

Passing the course
To achieve your qualification certificate, the Learner must successfully pass all of the course modules.

Every assignment submitted is assessed as either a Pass or Refer. A Learner is required to ultimately achieve a Pass for every assignment. Refers – or ‘Passes in Waiting’ as we like to call them, are hopefully few and far between. If an assignment receives a ‘Refer’, the learner has two complimentary ‘resits’ across the course. Additional ‘resits’ are charged at £25 per resit to cover the additional admin costs. If a Learner is unable to complete the course within the stipulated time frame, an extension may be granted but this will incur a re-registration fee.

Certification
Once all of the course modules have been successfully completed, samples of the Learner’s assignments are submitted for independent quality validation against the regulatory framework. And once validated, a certificate is issued to the learner. To manage expectations, this can take approximately 2-6 months as there are a number of different parties involved, outside of our control. If you’re applying for a licence in the meantime, ask us for an interim email confirmation of your course  achievement.

Non-accredited modules
For non-accredited modules, the Learner is required to achieve at least an 80% pass threshold. On achievement, an online certificate is made available for download.

Will these qualifications help me get a licence for my dog care business?

Short Answer:

Yes, the Level 3 Award meets the Animal Activity Licensing higher standards requirements, and the Level 2 Award demonstrates your commitment to dog safety.

Long Answer:

Yes, the Level 3 Award in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare is specifically designed to meet the higher standards required for Animal Activity Licensing (AAL) in the UK. Under AAL regulations, businesses providing dog boarding, day care, or breeding services must have at least one full-time member of staff who holds an appropriate Ofqual-regulated Level 3 qualification in canine care. By completing this qualification, you will meet this requirement and demonstrate to your local authority that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide high-quality care for dogs. This can help you achieve a higher star rating for your business and secure a longer licence duration. Additionally, having the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs demonstrates your commitment to the safety and welfare of dogs in your care, which can further strengthen your licence application and reassure clients.

Can I claim funding or financial support for these courses?

Short Answer:

Funding options vary by individual circumstances. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for the Level 3 Award. Contact Dog Business School for guidance.

Long Answer:

Funding and financial support options vary depending on your individual circumstances, including your age, employment status, location, and whether you are currently employed or seeking employment in the canine care sector. Some learners may be eligible for government funding schemes, such as Advanced Learner Loans for the Level 3 Award, whilst others may receive support from their employer if the qualifications are relevant to their job role. The Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs typically has more limited funding options due to its short duration and low credit value, but employer support may still be available. Dog Business School can provide guidance on available funding options and help you explore whether you are eligible for financial support. It is recommended to discuss your situation with the Dog Business School support team, who can advise on the best options for you.

What happens after I complete both qualifications?

Short Answer:

You’ll receive certificates from AIM Qualifications and iPET Network, which you can use for employment, licensing, or further study.

Long Answer:

Upon successful completion of both qualifications, you will receive certificates from AIM Qualifications (for the Level 3 Award) and iPET Network (for the Level 2 Award), confirming your achievements. The independent external validation process can take a few months from course completion. These certificates can be used to demonstrate your competence to employers, licensing authorities, and clients. You may choose to progress to higher-level qualifications, such as a Level 3 Diploma in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare, or specialised courses in areas such as canine behaviour, training, or nutrition. Alternatively, you may use your qualifications to enter employment in the canine care sector or to establish your own dog care business. Having both qualifications demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of canine care and emergency preparedness, making you a well-rounded professional in the field. Dog Business School offers a range of additional courses and resources to support your ongoing professional development.

How are the courses assessed?

Short Answer:

The Level 3 Award uses assignments and case studies, whilst the Level 2 Award uses written assessments such as multiple-choice questions.

Long Answer:

The assessment methods differ between the two qualifications. For the Level 3 Award in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare, assessment typically includes a combination of written assignments, case studies, and practical observations, rather than traditional written examinations. This approach allows you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding in a practical context, which is more relevant to the real-world application of canine care skills. For the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs, assessment is typically conducted through a combination of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, or other written assessments designed to test your understanding of the theoretical concepts covered in the course. Dog Business School will provide clear guidance on the assessment requirements for each qualification, and your tutor will support you throughout the assessment process to ensure you are well-prepared.

Can I get insurance for my dog care business with these qualifications?

Short Answer:

Yes, having both qualifications can help when applying for business insurance, as insurers value recognised qualifications.

Long Answer:

Having both the Level 3 Award in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare and the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs can be highly beneficial when applying for business insurance. Many insurers look favourably on individuals who have demonstrated their competence through recognised qualifications, as it shows that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective care for dogs. Insurance providers want to see that you are prepared to handle both routine care situations and emergencies, and holding Ofqual-regulated qualifications can help to demonstrate this. However, insurance requirements and premiums vary by provider, so it is recommended to discuss your qualifications with potential insurers to understand how they may affect your coverage and costs. Dog Business School can also provide guidance on finding suitable insurance providers for dog care businesses.

Should I complete the Level 2 Award in First Aid before starting the Level 3 Award?

Short Answer:

No specific order is required. Many learners complete the shorter Level 2 Award first, but you can choose the order that suits you.

Long Answer:

There is no strict requirement to complete the courses in a particular order, as they cover different aspects of canine care. However, many learners find it beneficial to complete the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs first, as it is shorter and can be completed quickly, giving you an early sense of achievement and building your confidence. The first aid knowledge you gain can also complement your understanding of canine welfare as you progress through the Level 3 Award. That said, some learners prefer to focus on the Level 3 Award first, as it is the more substantial qualification, and then complete the first aid course as a supplementary qualification. The choice is entirely yours, and Dog Business School’s flexible learning platform allows you to study both courses in the order that best suits your learning preferences and goals.

Do I need any prior qualifications to start the bundle?

Short Answer:

The Level 3 Award is suitable for learners aged 16+ with an interest in canine care. A Level 2 qualification is recommended but not essential. The Level 2 Award has minimal entry requirements.

Long Answer:

For the Level 3 Award in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare, learners should be at least 16 years old and have a genuine interest in working with dogs. Whilst there are no formal academic prerequisites, it is recommended that learners have a background in animal care or have completed a Level 2 qualification in a related field. For the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs, the entry requirements are minimal, making it accessible to a wide range of learners. Learners should be comfortable working with dogs of all breeds and sizes for both qualifications. If you are unsure whether you meet the entry requirements or would benefit from any preparatory study, Dog Business School’s support team can provide guidance and recommend any additional resources that may be helpful before you begin.

Can I use the first aid qualification to provide professional first aid services?

Short Answer:

No, the Level 2 Award provides foundational knowledge for emergencies but does not replace veterinary care or qualify you as a professional first aid provider.

Long Answer:

The Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs is designed to provide foundational knowledge for dog owners and professionals who want to be prepared for emergencies. It is not intended to qualify you as a professional canine first aid provider or to replace veterinary care. If a dog in your care requires emergency treatment, you should always seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. The knowledge gained from this course will help you to provide appropriate initial care and stabilise the dog until professional veterinary help is available. However, when combined with the Level 3 Award in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare, you will have a comprehensive understanding of both routine canine care and emergency situations, making you a highly competent and confident professional in the dog care sector.

Is practical first aid training included in the bundle?

Short Answer:

No, the Level 2 Award is theory-based. Practical hands-on training is recommended as a supplement.

Long Answer:

The Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs included in the bundle is a theory-based qualification that provides essential theoretical knowledge of canine first aid. Whilst it does not include hands-on practical training, the theoretical knowledge you gain is comprehensive and will prepare you to understand and respond to common first aid scenarios. It is highly recommended to supplement this theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on training if possible. Practical first aid courses allow you to practise techniques such as bandaging, CPR, and handling dogs in emergency situations under the guidance of an experienced instructor. This hands-on experience can help to build your confidence and ensure that you can apply your theoretical knowledge effectively in real-life situations. Dog Business School may be able to recommend practical first aid workshops or courses that complement the Level 2 Award, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of canine first aid.

How long do I have access to the course materials?

Short Answer:

You’ll have extended access to course materials, allowing you to study at your own pace. Contact Dog Business School for specific access periods.

Long Answer:

Dog Business School provides generous access periods to ensure you have ample time to complete both qualifications at your own pace. Specific access periods may vary, but typically you will have extended access to the course materials, allowing you to revisit content as needed and study according to your schedule. This extended access is particularly valuable for the Level 3 Award, which requires more time to complete, and ensures that you can balance your studies with work, family, and other commitments.
