Qualification Information

(These regulated qualifications meet the requirements of Defra and the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018.)

Your Level 2 Award in Canine Care and Welfare and the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs meets Defra’s requirements for running your own home boarding business or being an integral staff member in a day care or kennels.

You’ll learn how to identify and mitigate pain, suffering, and disease in dogs, as well as how to provide them with the best possible care.

The licence criteria stipulates that the licence holder or designated manager is required to be suitably qualified, and any staff employed to care for the animals must have the competence to identify the normal behaviour of the species for which they are caring and to recognise signs of, and take appropriate measures to mitigate or prevent, pain, suffering, injury, disease or abnormal behaviour.

Staff must “hold a formal qualification such as, a Level 2 qualification regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) appropriate for their role or to demonstrate they have relevant and sufficient knowledge and experience.”

Your immersion in the licensing guidance for your niche and the live 1-2-1 tutorial are designed to help you get your head round some of the trickier elements of licensing requirements and the opportunity for you to ask questions that are relevant to you and your business.

With these qualifications and courses you’ll be well on your way to starting your own regulated dog business – whether boarding or day care, or working as a licensed canine professional.

Who is the course for?

These regulated qualifications and course are for anyone who works with dogs – particularly in these settings:

  • Dog boarding
  • Dog day carer
  • Dog breeder
  • Dog walking
  • Dog trainer/behaviourist
  • Dog grooming
  • Pet sitting

You do not need any prior knowledge or qualifications to study for this qualification, although some experience or related knowledge will be advantageous.

Assignments and assessments

Learning style and content
This course is a blend of self-paced online learning, self-study recommended resources and research, video seminars, videos, ‘podcasts’, eLearning, Graphics/diagrams, multiple answers and short essay assignments.

Special consideration is provided for those requiring additional learning support (if you require additional learning support it is essential you advise us when you complete and submit your course registration form).

Assessments
Successful achievement is by a Learner presenting a portfolio of evidence that meets the assessment criteria.

Assessments require desk research from the study resources provided to assist the Learner in writing 200-500 word responses including diagrams, illustrations, tables and bullet points as necessary.

An assessment might typically ask the Learner to ‘Explain’ or ‘Describe’ a specific topic or situation, to avoid plagiarism and to provide citation references in order to support the Learner’s response.

Some of the course assessments require the Learner to select the correct options from multiple possible answers including True or False statements.

Self-Evaluation
At the end of the course, each learner is asked to complete a reflective self-evaluation of their learning experience and personal growth.

Syllabus
The course is taught against a prescriptive syllabus and the learner is required to evidence their understanding and application of the syllabus.

Passing the course
To achieve your qualification certificate, the Learner must successfully pass all of the course modules.

Every assignment submitted is assessed as either a Pass or Refer. A Learner is required to ultimately achieve a Pass for every assignment. Refers – or ‘Passes in Waiting’ as we like to call them, are hopefully few and far between. If an assignment receives a ‘Refer’, the learner has two complimentary ‘resits’ across the course. Additional ‘resits’ are charged at £25 per resit to cover the additional admin costs. If a Learner is unable to complete the course within the stipulated time frame, an extension may be granted but this will incur a re-registration fee.

Certification
Once all of the course modules have been successfully completed, samples of the Learner’s assignments are submitted for independent quality validation against the regulatory framework. And once validated, a certificate is issued to the learner. To manage expectations, this can take approximately 2-6 months as there are a number of different parties involved, outside of our control. If you’re applying for a licence in the meantime, ask us for an interim email confirmation of your course  achievement

This personalised support ensures that you not only have the qualifications but also the practical knowledge and confidence to launch your home boarding business successfully.

What will I learn about canine behaviour and welfare?

Short Answer:

You will learn to understand normal canine behaviour, recognise welfare and behaviour issues, provide appropriate enrichment, implement preventive measures, and create routines that keep dogs happy and settled in your care.

Long Answer:

The Level 2 Award in Canine Care & Welfare component of this bundle provides comprehensive education in canine behaviour and welfare, essential for anyone caring for dogs from different households in a home boarding environment. You will learn to understand normal canine behaviour, including how dogs communicate, what behaviours are typical and healthy, and how to recognise when a dog is comfortable, stressed, anxious, or unwell. The course teaches you to recognise welfare and behaviour issues before they escalate, enabling you to implement preventive measures that keep dogs happy and settled in your home. You will understand how to provide appropriate canine enrichment, including mental stimulation, physical exercise, and social interaction that meets individual dogs’ needs. The course covers suitable routines to prevent welfare and behaviour issues, helping you to create structured daily schedules that provide security and comfort for dogs staying away from their own homes. You will also learn about appropriate canine training techniques, enabling you to manage behaviour positively and reinforce good habits during dogs’ stays. Understanding canine health is also covered, including common health disorders, disease prevention protocols essential when caring for dogs from different households, and the basics of human and canine relationships that help you build trust and rapport with the dogs in your care. This comprehensive knowledge ensures that every guest thrives in your care and owners have complete peace of mind.

What first aid skills will I learn?

Short Answer:

You will learn comprehensive canine first aid skills covering wound care, emergency CPR, recognising health emergencies, and providing appropriate first response until veterinary care is available.

Long Answer:

The Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs component of this bundle provides comprehensive training in canine first aid, preparing you to respond confidently and effectively to health emergencies that may occur whilst dogs are in your care. The course covers a wide range of first aid skills, starting with how to recognise health emergencies and assess a dog’s condition, including checking vital signs, recognising signs of distress, and determining the severity of situations. The course also covers how to safely transport an injured dog, how to communicate effectively with veterinary professionals during emergencies, and the importance of maintaining accurate records of any health incidents. Importantly, the training emphasises the boundaries of first aid—understanding when immediate veterinary attention is required and that first aid is about providing appropriate initial response and stabilisation until professional veterinary care is available. Do I need any prior qualifications or experience?

Short Answer:

No prior qualifications are required, though you should be at least 16 years old and have basic literacy and numeracy skills. The bundle is designed for beginners taking their first professional steps.

Long Answer:

The Level 2 Dog Home Boarding Super Bundle is specifically designed for beginners taking their first professional steps into canine care and home boarding, so no prior qualifications or formal experience in dog care are required. As Level 2 qualifications, these awards are designed to build your professional foundation from the ground up, assuming no prior formal knowledge of canine behaviour, welfare, or first aid. The typical entry requirements are that you should be at least 16 years old and have basic literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 1, which simply means you can read and understand course materials, write assignments, and perform basic calculations. Whilst formal qualifications are not required, it is beneficial to have some practical experience with dogs, whether through owning your own dogs, volunteering, or working with dogs in informal settings, as this provides context for the learning and helps you to relate theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. However, even if you are relatively new to dog care, the course provides comprehensive foundational knowledge that will prepare you for home boarding. The bundle is perfect for those exploring career changes, seeking flexible work around family life, or expanding existing pet services, regardless of their educational background. The combination of online learning, practical assignments, and personalised tutorial support ensures that learners with diverse backgrounds and experience levels can successfully complete the qualifications and launch their home boarding businesses with confidence.

Unlike generic course content, this tutorial is tailored to your individual situation, allowing you to explore practical concerns that are specific to your home, location, target market, and personal circumstances. During the tutorial, you can discuss a wide range of topics including preparing your home and garden for boarding, such as necessary adaptations, safety measures, and creating appropriate spaces for dogs, developing your business policies including terms and conditions, booking procedures, and cancellation policies, setting appropriate pricing that reflects your location, experience, and the services you offer, marketing your services and building your reputation in the local community, understanding your specific local authority’s licensing requirements and preparing for your inspection, and handling common challenges that new home boarders face, such as managing multiple dogs, dealing with separation anxiety, or handling difficult behaviours. The tutorial is typically scheduled at a time that suits you, either during your studies when you have progressed through the course materials and have specific questions, or after you have completed the qualifications when you are ready to launch your business. The flexibility of scheduling ensures that you can make the most of this valuable support at the point when it will be most beneficial to you.

How does this bundle help me build my reputation as a home boarder?

Short Answer:

The bundle provides recognised Ofqual-regulated qualifications that demonstrate professional competence to customers and licensing authorities, plus guidance on marketing and building your reputation during the one-to-one tutorial.

Long Answer:

The Level 2 Dog Home Boarding Super Bundle helps you build your reputation as a professional, trustworthy home boarder in several important ways. Firstly, the two Ofqual-regulated qualifications—the Level 2 Award in Canine Care & Welfare and the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs—provide nationally recognised credentials that demonstrate your professional competence and commitment to high standards. These qualifications can be prominently displayed on your website, social media profiles, and marketing materials, immediately differentiating you from unlicensed or unqualified individuals offering home boarding services. Customers increasingly expect professional qualifications, particularly for services involving the care and safety of their beloved pets, and being able to demonstrate that you have invested in proper training provides significant reassurance. Secondly, the comprehensive knowledge you gain through the qualifications enables you to provide genuinely high-quality care, which leads to satisfied customers, positive reviews, and word-of-mouth referrals—the foundation of reputation building in the pet care sector. Thirdly, the licensing guidance and one-to-one tutorial provide practical advice on marketing your services and building your reputation in the local community, including strategies for attracting your first customers, developing a professional online presence, and leveraging local networks and pet-related businesses. Finally, being able to demonstrate that you meet DEFRA’s licensing requirements and hold appropriate qualifications enhances your credibility with licensing authorities, potentially contributing to higher star ratings that further enhance your reputation and marketability.

Can I get insurance for my home boarding business with these qualifications?

Short Answer:

Yes, holding recognised Level 2 qualifications in canine care and first aid significantly strengthens your insurance applications and may result in more favourable terms and premiums from specialist pet business insurers.

Long Answer:

Yes, the Level 2 Dog Home Boarding Super Bundle significantly supports your ability to obtain appropriate insurance for your home boarding business, which is essential for professional operation and is typically required as part of licensing. Specialist pet business insurers view Ofqual-regulated qualifications very favourably because they demonstrate that you have appropriate knowledge and competence in canine care, welfare, and first aid, which reduces the risk of incidents, injuries, or welfare issues that could result in insurance claims. When applying for public liability insurance, which covers you if a dog in your care injures someone or damages property, and professional indemnity insurance, which covers you if you are accused of negligence or inadequate care, insurers will typically ask about your qualifications and experience. Being able to demonstrate that you hold the Level 2 Award in Canine Care & Welfare and the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs provides strong evidence of your professional competence and may result in more favourable terms, lower premiums, or access to insurers who might otherwise decline cover to unqualified individuals. Some insurers specialising in pet businesses may require or strongly prefer applicants to hold recognised qualifications, making these awards not just beneficial but potentially essential for obtaining cover. Additionally, holding first aid qualifications demonstrates that you are prepared to respond appropriately to health emergencies, which further reduces risk from the insurer’s perspective. The licensing guidance included in the bundle can also provide advice on insurance requirements and recommendations for specialist insurers who understand the home boarding sector.

What happens after I complete the Super Bundle?

Short Answer:

After completing the bundle, you will receive your two Ofqual-regulated certificates, be prepared to apply for your home boarding licence, and have the knowledge and confidence to launch your professional home boarding business.

Long Answer:

After successfully completing the Level 2 Dog Home Boarding Super Bundle, you will be well-prepared to take the next steps towards launching your professional home boarding business. Upon completion of the assessments and assignments, you will receive two separate certificates for the Level 2 Award in Canine Care & Welfare (AIM Qualifications) and the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs (iPET Network). These are nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated certificates that you can display proudly and use to demonstrate your professional competence to customers, insurers, and licensing authorities. With your qualifications complete, you will be ready to apply for your home boarding licence from your local authority, using the licensing guidance provided in the bundle to navigate the application process. The knowledge and skills you have gained will enable you to prepare your home and garden appropriately, develop professional policies and procedures, and approach your licensing inspection with confidence. You will be equipped to provide high-quality, professional care that ensures every dog in your care thrives and their owners have complete peace of mind. Many graduates of this bundle go on to build successful home boarding businesses, starting with a small number of clients and gradually building their reputation and client base through excellent service and word-of-mouth referrals. Dog Business School also offers additional courses and resources that you may wish to explore as your business grows, including higher-level qualifications, business management courses, and specialised training in areas such as canine behaviour or specific breeds. The foundation provided by this Super Bundle gives you the confidence, competence, and credentials to launch and grow a successful, compliant home boarding business.

How is this Super Bundle different from taking the qualifications separately?

Short Answer:

The Super Bundle combines both qualifications with licensing guidance and a personalised one-to-one tutorial at a discounted price, providing comprehensive support specifically tailored for home boarding that you would not receive by taking qualifications separately.

Long Answer:

The Level 2 Dog Home Boarding Super Bundle offers significant advantages over taking the two qualifications separately, both in terms of cost-effectiveness and the additional support provided. Firstly, the bundle is offered at a discounted price compared to purchasing the Level 2 Award in Canine Care & Welfare and the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Dogs separately, providing better value for money whilst ensuring you have both essential qualifications. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the Super Bundle includes comprehensive Licensing Guidance specifically tailored for home boarding, which demystifies the regulatory requirements under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals)(England) Regulations 2018 and helps you navigate the application process. This guidance is not included when taking the qualifications separately and would otherwise need to be researched independently or obtained through costly consultancy services. Thirdly, the bundle includes a personalised live one-to-one tutorial with an experienced home boarding practitioner, providing dedicated time to discuss practical concerns specific to your circumstances, such as preparing your home and garden, managing bookings, building your reputation, and handling common challenges. This personalised support is invaluable for new home boarders and is not available when taking qualifications separately. Finally, the Super Bundle is specifically curated for home boarding, ensuring that all components work together to provide comprehensive preparation for this specific business type, rather than taking general qualifications that may not address the specific needs and challenges of home boarding. The integrated approach of the Super Bundle provides better preparation, better value, and better support for aspiring home boarders.
